Equipped with the BMW Assist System, BMW's new "Risk of Severe Injury" feature estimates the severity of injuries may have suffered during an accident. Available in the 2009 and later BMW vehicles, excluding the X3, the new service passes the information on to medical personnel when an accident has occurred.

The system, which consists of a dozen or so on-board sensors, was developed by BMW and the William Lehman Injury Research Center in Miami. The program determines whether the passengers in the front seat wore seat belts, what speed the car was going at impact, where the car was hit and whether the airbags were triggered.

The service is available for free in the BMW M5, M6 and 5, 6 and 7 series. For other models, the Assist system will cost $750.
