Ford's 2018 F-150 XL 3.3L SuperCab

Ford improved the fuel efficiency of its F-150 pickups for 2018, including the base XL fitted with the 3.3-liter non-turbo V-6 that now reaches 20 mpg as a rear-wheel driver.

We tested the base work truck F-150 that should be popular with fleet purchasers. The truck moves to a two-bar (from three-bar) grille.

This F-150's GVWR of 6,300 puts it squarely in Class 2.

Our test truck would retail for $36,285.

Here's a closer look at the cab with the front middle seat folded down.

The instrument panel adds a gear-selection display.

The truck lacks carpet, which allows fleet maintenance personnel to easily hose it off after a dirty work day.

The truck rides on the 145-inch wheelbase and 17-inch wheels.

This F-150 is equipped with a 6.5-foot box.

This truck can tow up to 5,000 pounds and haul 1,804 pounds of payload.

The SuperCab configuration includes a full front door and rear door on either side.
