On Oct. 20, 55 Wilmington, Mass.-based Federal Express Home Delivery drivers will be participating in an election to decide whether to unionize under the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the Tewksbury Advocate reports. The vote comes a month after a Sept. 20 ruling by the National Labor Relations Board that FedEx drivers are not, as FedEx official policy insists, independent contractors but rather company employees. Under federal labor law, independent contractors are not eligible for union representation. Teamster spokespeople hope the Wilmington vote will encourage the other 15,000 non-unionized FedEx drivers nation-wide to conduct similar elections. According to the Tewksbury Advocate, FedEx Ground spokesman Perry Colosimo said that the NLRB’s decision may be appealed.
