Researchers at the University of Cincinnati are developing a snowplow simulator that could change the way drivers are recruited and trained. This simulator allows new drivers to experience what it’s like to drive a plow truck and gain experience before snow hits the ground, which is especially important as the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) hires 350 new plow drivers every winter, reports WCPO.
The simulator offers drivers a virtual 3D experience of driving a snowplow, including movement and sounds. The research team is collecting real-life visual data so the video screens are identical to ODOT snowplow routes, including city streets and interstate highways.
