Mercedes-Benz Vans is showing a trio of vehicles in Copenhagen under its Vision Urbanetic mobility concept that use battery-electric powertrains and an autonomous driving platform as the foundation to move cargo or people.
The vehicles also use an intelligent, self-learning information technology structure that will continuously analyze transportation needs. Supply and demand fluctuations are captured in real time so vehicle resources can be used to optimal effect. The vehicle could be used in a ride-hailing service.
The concept vehicle allows switchable bodies that can be replaced to accommodate up to 12 people or goods transport of up to 10 EPAL pallets. The load space is 12 feet long and fits into a total vehicle length of 16.8 feet.
The vehicle eschews a steering wheel, pedals, and a dashboard in favor of additional room for cargo. Also, the vehicle doesn't have a driver's cab.
In 2016, Mercedes-Benz showed its Vision Van concept that also incorporated new ideas about mobility and goods movement, including a cargo area that could accommodate three different temperature-controlled sections.
