The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) has received more than 8,000 responses to its gasoline engine repair survey, which is still open through April 30. As a thank you, ASE will randomly award $500 Snap-on gift cards to five lucky technicians who share their time and experience by taking the survey.

“The response to this survey has been tremendous and we want to thank everyone that has participated so far,” said Matt Shepanek, vice president, credential testing programs for ASE. “The preliminary results will be shared with the industry, used to update training, and will be included in the review of the ASE engine repair tasks and test questions.”

Purpose of the ASE Engine Repair Survey

ASE said it was commissioned to conduct a series of studies to identify and understand which repair tasks automotive service technicians perform most frequently. The initial survey is focused on gasoline engine repair tasks.

Survey results obtained through April 9 showed that 72% of those who completed the survey are currently A1 certified or were in the past, and 76% hold one or more ASE A2-A8 automotive certifications. According to ASE, most respondents hold each of those respective certifications.

Learning the Details of Tech Training

Regarding training, technicians receive training from a variety of sources including:

  • On the job - 79%
  • OEM training - 69%
  • College - 57%
  • High school - 53%
  • Aftermarket - 47%

Among those who completed the survey, 82% said they have 10 or more years of experience and 57% said ASE certifications factored into their pay plans.
