Republic Services, Inc. announced the deployment of 56 compressed natural gas (CNG) solid waste and recycling trucks to serve customers throughout the South Shore and South Coast of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. "We consider the reduction of ozone-forming emissions to be more than an ideal; it is priority we are committed to whenever and wherever possible," said Jeff Burdick, area president of Republic Services. "This community is home to considerable national and natural treasures. Our employees are proud to live and work here, and we are committed to doing our part to protect and preserve the local environment for generations to come."
Republic installed a natural gas fueling station to support its new fleet of CNG powered trucks in Fall River. Natural gas fueling stations enable CNG trucks to fuel during non-peak hours, which has the added benefit of reduced energy consumption during the refueling process.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, each new CNG solid waste and recycling truck reduces ozone-forming emissions by as much as 80 percent when compared to older diesel powered trucks. In addition, each new CNG truck deployed is equivalent to removing five passenger vehicles from local roads for one year, or to adding 600 mature trees into the local environment.
Republic operates a fleet of more than 1,400 CNG vehicles and 26 natural gas fueling stations nationwide. Approximately 50 percent of all Republic vehicles purchased in 2013 are powered by the domestic fuel source.
Republic Services employs 242 team members, and serves more than 245,000 residential and 15,000 commercial customers throughout the South Shore and South Coast of Massachusetts, as well as inRhode Island. The Company owns two local hauling divisions, a recycling processing center, and a landfill. Through its subsidiaries, Republic has been proudly serving customers in southeastern Massachusettsand Rhode Island areas for 60 years.
