REDFORD, MI - Detroit Diesel announced it has delivered its 15,000th DD15 engine to Old Dominion Freight Line.
Based in Thomasville, N.C., Old Dominion Freight Line has been a Detroit Diesel customer for more than 30 years. It currently has more than 500 DD15-equipped tractors in its fleet.
"What I like most about the DD15 is its reliability, fuel economy and performance," said Ed Richardson, vice president of equipment and maintenance for Old Dominion Freight Line. "The engine has surpassed our expectations."
According to David Siler, director of marketing for Detroit Diesel, the market's response to and the demand for the DD15 has been tremendous.
"Given today's economy, our customers cite fuel economy as a leading factor when purchasing engines, and the DD15 more than delivers," said Siler.
Added Andrew Reed, owner, Rick Reed & Sons Trucking, the DD15's performance has been impressive. The Versailles, Ky.-based company runs six DD15-equipped trucks for its livestock hauling business.
"We haul a lot of heavy loads, and even with the extra weight, we're passing people as we go up hills," said Reed. "Our trucks run great. The DD15 not only provides superior power, but the fuel mileage has been outstanding, too."
The DD15's success is due in part to its Amplified Common Rail Fuel System (ACRS) - the first high-pressure, electronically-controlled amplified common rail fuel system for heavy duty engines in North America. Detroit Diesel's ACRS system is the result of years of development and testing, and is the most flexible and precise fuel management system of any heavy-duty diesel engine ever produced in North America.
ACRS - when combined with the engine's turbo compounding technology - helps the DD15 deliver up to 5 percent better fuel economy than the Detroit Diesel Series 60.
"ACRS is a key foundation of our heavy-duty engine platform for a reason - it has proven advantages for fuel economy, emissions and performance - which is exactly what our customers have responded to," said Siler. "And, in combination with our BlueTec(r) emissions technology, the DD15 will continue to be the industry's most efficient and reliable engine available in 2010."
