Navistar Releases Over-the-Road and Wind Tunnel Testing Results of International ProStar

ARTICLE TOOLS        | E-MailPrint

WARRENVILLE, IL – Navistar has released results of extensive testing confirming that the International ProStar is the most aerodynamic and fuel-efficient Class 8 truck on the road, the company said. Recent tests demonstrate that the International ProStar is 7.3 percent more aerodynamic and seven percent more fuel-efficient than Freightliner’s Cascadia, ProStar’s closest competitor. Navistar’s researched revealed that at 120,000 miles a year, each ProStar can save approximately $5,800 annually in fuel over its nearest competitor.

Navistar is conducting and publishing ongoing testing results. Both over-the-road and wind tunnel tests use rigorous TMC and SAE testing procedures, regarded as the highest standards of testing in the transportation industry. Wind tunnel tests were conducted at the National Research Council Institute for Aerospace Research in Canada utilizing SAE J1252 wind tunnel testing practices.

Navistar estimates that the International ProStar’s aerodynamic design can save 1,400 gallons of fuel annually per truck over competitive aero trucks (based on 20,000 gallons of fuel used per year and seven percent fuel savings; 120,000 miles per year at a six mpg baseline). At the national average price of diesel ($4.15 as of May 7, 2008), saving 1,400 gallons of fuel would save each customer about $5,800 per truck annually.

Rising Commodity Prices Threaten to Increase Truck Prices

By Mike Antich
The high cost of raw materials, in addition to the high cost of fuel, is starting to make a financial impact on fleets by increasing costs for truck chassis, bodies, trailers, liftgates, and other upfit equipment. On July 9, Navistar announced that rising commodity costs have forced the company to increase prices of International truck models. Is this another in a series of commodity-related price increases that we will see from other OEMs, upfitters, and trailer manufacturers?

Bleak New-Vehicle Sales to Usher a Strong Used-Vehicle Market

By Mike Antich
Today's new-vehicle market will generate (ultimately) the used-vehicle market of tomorrow. If there is a decrease in new-vehicle sales, there will be a corresponding decrease in the future number of used vehicles in the marketplace. Even though there is a lot of nervousness in the market, no one is anticipating a dramatic decrease in new-vehicle commercial fleet orders for the 2009 model-year. However, the same cannot be said for the retail new-vehicle market.
