Jackson, Mich.-based Consumers Energy has been working since Wednesday to restore power, getting help from neighboring utility fleets.
Consumers Energy has developed two new specially equipped vehicles, designed and outfitted to respond to any localized emergency the energy provider may face, as well as to support widespread storm restoration work.
The scholarship will assist individuals interested in becoming utility line workers.
By developing this dedicated work force, the company has been able to more quickly respond to requests for gas main installation due to an increase in municipal, commercial, industrial, residential and other large construction projects, allowing other Consumers Energy employees to concentrate on emergent work and other projects.
Fleets in Michigan, Georgia, and Florida looking to expand or replace their existing fleets of heavy equipment including utility vehicles have more than 1,400 items to choose from in December.
Consumers Energy has an electric vehicle program, CNG fueling stations and CNG-converted fleet vehicles, coupled with several other large initiatives, all in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The recent ice storm that swept across Maine and Michigan the week before Christmas may have done some damage, but it also appears to have had a positive impact: appreciation for the utility crews who worked tirelessly through the holidays to restore services for their customers.
Utility companies in Illinois and surrounding states had their work cut out for them this past week after the tornadoes that struck Illinois on Nov. 17. Strategically located in Grand Rapids, Jackson, and Cadillac, Mich., the mobile storm units will be deployed to areas where powerful storms are forecast to hit, and will serve as staging areas for crews performing service restoration.
