Orders of classes 5 to 7 vehicles declined 10% in October, while heavy duty orders were flat, according to ACT Research.

The preliminary data shows an month that reversed trend of stronger medium-duty and weaker heavy-duty orders. ACT will post final numbers by the middle of the month.

Orders of classes 5 to 7 vehicles fell 10% from September to 18,400 units. Orders were down 18% from October of 2015. Overall truck orders including class 8 vehicles reached 32,400 vehicles.

"The month’s 13,900 net order reflects lingering overcapacity from too many Class 8 tractors being purchased relative to freight creation in 2015 and into early 2016," said Kenny Vieth, ACT's president and senior analyst.

October is typically a strong order month for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, he said.
