TORRANCE, CA - Toyota has announced several updates to its popular pickup truck line, which inclues the Tundra and Tacoma, including Display Navigation with Entune on the Tundra and a new Limited Package on the Tacoma.

The Toyota Tundra, recognized for its value and dependability, offers changes for 2013 that enhance value and comfort in the hard-working, hard-playing full-size pickup truck. The Toyota Tacoma remains the best-selling compact pickup truck in the U.S. market and further ensures its leadership for 2013 by offering a new Limited Package for a touch of luxury in a hard-working pickup.

TOYOTA TUNDRA

The Platinum Package, which was available for the Tundra CrewMax Limited model in 2012, now becomes a full model grade. The Platinum Grade offers numerous luxury features, such as heated and ventilated front bucket seats with embroidered headrests and driver’s seat two-position memory feature, perforated leather-trimmed seating surfaces, DVD navigation system, power tilt/slide moonroof with sliding sunshade, and wood-grain-style interior trim.

Toyota made its Display Navigation with Entune multimedia package available in CrewMax and Double Cab Tundra grade models late in the 2012 model-year, and this becomes a regular option for the 2013 model-year.

Pickup truck customers who like the rugged design and capability of the Tundra TRD Rock Warrior Package can now get it on Limited Grade models. Previously, this package had been available only on Tundra Grade models.

The 2013 Tundra is offered in three grades (Tundra, Limited and Platinum), three cab styles (Regular, Double Cab and Crew Max), three wheelbase lengths (126.8, 145.7 and 164.6 inches, depending on model and configuration) and three bed lengths (78.7, 97.6 and for CrewMax only, 66.7-inches). The hard-working, hard-playing Tundra offers three engine choices, a 270-hp 4.0L V-6, a 310-hp 4.6L V-8, and the 5.7L V-8 with 381 hp.

A Tundra Work Truck Package is aimed at commercial truck buyers or customers who need a tough, no-frills truck with exceptional cargo and towing capacity. The package features heavy-duty vinyl-trimmed seating surfaces, and heavy-duty all-weather flooring.

 ...Continued details on Tundra...

Performance

A 4.0L Dual Overhead Cam (DOHC) V6 is standard in Tundra Regular and Double Cab models and produces 270 horsepower and 278 lb.-ft. peak torque. It is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission with uphill/downhill shift logic.

The available 4.6L DOHC i-Force V-8 offers 310 hp and 327 lb.-ft. of peak torque, and the 5.7L DOHC i-Force V-8 produces 381 hp and 401 lb.-ft. of peak torque. All Tundra engines feature an aluminum cylinder block and DOHC heads, along with Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) for a broad torque curve and optimized efficiency.

Both i-Force V-8 engines are teamed with a 6-speed automatic transmission, and both meet Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle (ULEV II) emissions certification requirements.

Capability, Handling and Ride

Tundra's advanced TripleTech frame uses wide, full-boxed rails for the front portion, a reinforced C-channel under the cab and an open C-channel underneath the bed to help maximize strength, ride quality and durability. The double A-arm front suspension uses coil-over spring shock units, while a front-mounted steering rack helps enhance steering feel and response.

The rear suspension uses staggered shocks mounted outboard of the springs to improve the shocks' dampening efficiency. Spring rates are tuned to provide a flat vehicle stance when fully loaded.

Tundra 4x4 models use a part-time, electronically controlled four-wheel drive system to provide 4x2, 4x4 Hi and 4x4 Lo ranges. The driver selects the mode using a dial on the dash. The standard Automatic Limited-Slip Differential (Auto LSD) helps provide better acceleration in deep sand or mud and on mixed-friction surfaces. Compared to a conventional mechanical limited slip differential, the Auto LSD system is much more responsive and has better wear characteristics.

The Tundra’s VSC system integrates traction control (TRAC) and enhances traction on or off-road by helping keep the vehicle on its intended course. Integration of these technologies also provides driver-selectable versatility to tackle just about any road surface or driving condition. In “normal” mode, VSC, TRAC and Auto LSD all function to help enable traction and control capability. “TRAC Off” and “Auto LSD” modes activate Auto LSD to help extricate the Tundra from extreme conditions.

The standard four-wheel disc brakes use large ventilated rotors – 13.9 inches and 1.26-inches thick – with four-piston calipers in front; and 13.6 x 0.71-inch with two-piston calipers in the rear. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) include Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD).

Tundra Grade is equipped with standard 18-inch styled steel wheels with P255/70 R18 tires. Limited Grade models get standard 18-inch five-spoke aluminum alloy wheels with wider P275/65 R18 tires and offer optional 20-inch five-spoke alloy wheels with P275/55 R20 tires.

An optional TRD Off-Road Package combines off-road tuned suspension featuring Bilstein gas-charged mono-tube shock absorbers, P275/65 R18 BFGoodrich off-road tires on 18-inch alloy wheels, plus fog lamps, fuel tank skid plates and TRD Off-Road graphics.

The available TRD Rock Warrior Special Edition package combines a tough off-road look with rugged off-road capability. Available only as a 4x4, the truck includes Bilstein shock absorbers and 17-inch TRD Rock Warrior forged alloy wheels with LT285/70 R17 BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO tires. The package is available in Black, Radiant Red, Magnetic Gray Metallic or Super White exterior colors.

On Tundra Grade, TRD Rock Warrior features a color-keyed front bumper and grille surround with matte black rear bumper.  The Rock Warrior Tundra is also equipped with fog lamps, privacy glass, and front bucket seats with eight-way adjustable driver’s seat, four-way adjustable front passenger seat and black fabric-trimmed seating surfaces, plus an auto-dimming rearview mirror with integrated backup camera display, compass, and HomeLink universal transceiver.

When ordered on a Limited Grade model, the TRD Rock Warrior Package resembles the Limited except for 17-inch forged alloy wheels, Bilstein shocks, a front skid plate and a TRD Rock Warrior graphic on the exterior with the amenities and features of the Limited in the interior.

Safety

All Tundra models feature the standard Toyota Star Safety System that includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Smart Stop (SST) brake override technology.

Smart Stop Technology is designed to automatically reduce engine power when both brake and accelerator pedals are pressed at the same time under certain conditions, helping the driver bring the vehicle to a stop.

Tundra features standard front seat-mounted side airbags, and front and rear Roll-sensing Side Curtain Airbags (RSCA) in all models, along with adjustable headrests for all seating positions. Front seatbelts include pretensioners and force limiters. All models are equipped with driver and front outboard passenger air bags with an Advanced Air bag System, and driver and front outboard passenger knee air bags.

Comprehensive Towing Package

An available Tow Package on all Tundra V8 models helps increase towing capacity up to 10,400 pounds, depending on the model and drivetrain. A one-piece towing receiver is integrated into the frame prior to bed installation. The structure runs nearly two feet down the length of the frame and attaches to each side around the rear spring shackles' cross-member with 12 bolts.

Tow Package rear springs help provide level full-load rear suspension height and maintain a full range of suspension travel.  The Tow Package also upgrades Tundra’s cooling and electrical systems, including an engine oil cooler and a power steering fluid cooler.

Electrical upgrades include an under-dash connector pre-wire for a third-party trailer brake controller, both seven- and four-pin trailer brake connectors near the hitch, and an up-rated alternator. On 5.7L models, heated outside power tow mirrors with turn signal indicators and manual-extend feature are available.

With the Tow Package, the six-speed automatic transmission gains a TOW/HAUL shift mode, selectable by a dedicated switch. The TOW/HAUL mode applies specific logic for adjusting the throttle sensitivity and transmission shift control, favoring and holding lower gears when accelerating or decelerating to help enhance control and safety. Standard Trailer Sway Control uses the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) to help minimize the impact of trailer sway.

Exterior Design

Tundra offers three cab styles: two-door Regular Cab, four-door Double Cab, and the super-sized four-door CrewMax. Tundra Regular Cab and Double Cab models are offered in standard bed (78.7-inch) or long bed (97.6-inch) configurations, while the CrewMax comes with a 66.7-inch bed. All beds are 22.2-in. deep. The Tundra's lockable all-steel tailgate lowers slowly with no slam and can easily be removed.

On Double Cab and CrewMax models, the standard power rear windows retract completely into the doors. Regular and Double Cab models offer an optional horizontal sliding rear window. A power vertical sliding rear window is standard on CrewMax.

A standard cargo lamp illuminates the bed at night, and a Deck Rail System with four adjustable tie-down cleats is standard on Limited grade models and available on all others. Featuring four adjustable tie-down cleats connected to the rails of the all-steel bed, the rail system can be used to secure many types of loads, with a 220-lb. rating per attachment.

Genuine Toyota Accessories available for the Tundra include a number of cargo bed enhancements: tonneau cover, bed mat, bedliner, bed extender, bed step, deck rail accessories, cargo divider, and tie-downs with utility hooks.

Interior Design

Tundra’s dashboard design provides the driver with an unobstructed view of the road and gauges, while keeping all controls within easy reach. The large door handles and easy-to-turn control knobs can be operated even while wearing work gloves. The 3.4-liter upper glove box can hold a standard Thermos™ bottle, with additional space available in the 9.5-liter lower glove box.

The center console in bucket-seat models can hold a laptop computer or hanging file folder storage, which was a pickup truck first. There are two 12-volt DC power outlets, one on the dash and one in the center console. CrewMax models add a third outlet at the rear of the console; outlets remain live for up to two hours after the ignition is switched off.

The Tundra Regular Cab offers generous behind-the-seat storage, and the Double Cab features front-hinged rear doors that open up to 80 degrees. Double Cab models provide a roomy rear seat with a 22-degree backrest angle and 34.7 inches of rear legroom. The Tundra CrewMax has limo-like maximum rear legroom of 44.5 inches, plus a reclining and sliding rear seat. A 10-inch slide range allows the owner to tailor both passenger comfort and room for onboard cargo. CrewMax models have additional storage under the rear seat.

A concealed compartment to the right of the shift lever can hold a Thomas® guidebook. The built-in toolbox behind the rear seat in all models provides clean, accessible storage for the jack, handle and lug wrench.

In Double Cab models, the rear-seat cushions flip up with an easy one hand operation to provide additional storage space. In CrewMax models, the rear seat backs fold in an easy one-hand operation to provide a flat storage area.

Comfort and Convenience

All Tundra models have a standard heavy-duty battery, heavy-duty starter, windshield wiper de-icer, daytime running lights (DRL), front and rear mudguards, and heated, power, outside mirrors. Inside Tundra, richly textured fabrics and deep-grain leathers are available in four colors.

A tilt and telescoping steering wheel is standard in all models, with power adjustment available in the Limited grade. Tundra-grade models come standard with dual-zone air conditioning with individual temperature settings for driver and front passenger, including a seven-speed blower and a replaceable dust and pollen filter. Limited and Platinum Grade models feature a dual-zone automatic climate control.

Standard High Solar Energy-Absorbing (HSEA) glass helps filter solar heat and most UV light energy entering the vehicle. This helps reduce occupant sun exposure, helps to keep the interior cooler, and enhances durability of interior materials. Limited and Platinum Grade models feature standard IR-cut glass that further reduces solar levels.

Limited and Platinum Grade Double Cab and Crew Max models add front and rear parking sonar to the standard equipment list. An auto-dimming rearview mirror with integrated backup camera display, compass, and HomeLink universal transceiver is standard on Limited grade models and optional on Tundra grade.

Other features that distinguish the Limited grade models include a chrome grille surround with matte silver billet-style grille insert; rear door privacy glass; chrome, heated auto-dimming power-folding outside mirrors with turn signal indicators; leather-trimmed and heated front bucket seats with 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat with power thigh and lumbar support and four-way power-adjustable front passenger seat with power lumbar support.

...Continued details on Tacoma...

Exterior Design

Tacoma configurations are based on three cab types: Regular Cab, Access Cab, and the four-door Double Cab. The rear doors on Access Cab models open to 80 degrees to give passengers easy ingress and egress.

Bold overfenders distinguish PreRunner and 4x4 models. PreRunner models combine the 4x2 drivetrain with the 4x4's raised riding stance and styling. Double Cab models offer a roof rack system with crossbars that deploy from the roof rails.

Tacoma Regular Cab models are built on a 109.6-inch wheelbase; Access Cab models ride on a 127.4-inch wheelbase. The Tacoma Double Cab with the standard five-foot bed shares the 127.4-inch wheelbase, while the Double Cab long-bed models use a 140.6-inch wheelbase.

The Tacoma Regular Cab and Access Cab models feature a 73.5-inch-long bed. The Double Cab is available with a choice of a 60.3-inch bed or the 73.5-inch bed. The Tacoma's composite inner bed is made from a sheet-molded composite (SMC) deck and tough, durable walls that are 10 percent lighter than steel. The bed deck features two-tier loading and an integrated deck-rail utility with four standard adjustable tie-down cleats. The rails are compatible with Genuine Toyota Accessories, including cargo bed cross bars, a fork-mount bike rack, and diamond-plate storage boxes. An available 115V/400W power point further extends the bed’s utility.

Performance

The 2013 Tacoma model line offers two engines: a 2.7L Dual Overhead Cam (DOHC) four-cylinder that produces 159 horsepower and 180 lb.-ft. of torque, and a 4.0L DOHC V-6 that provides 236 horsepower with 266 lb.-ft. of torque. In both engines, variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) ensures strong low-end and mid-range torque. An Electronic Throttle Control System with intelligence helps optimize performance and fuel economy.

The V-6 can be teamed with either a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission. Four-cylinder models offer a choice between a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic transmission. When equipped with a V-6 Tow Package, Access Cab models boast a maximum tow capacity of up to 6,500 lbs.

T|X Packages for the Hardcore Pickup Fan

The T|X and T|X Pro Packages, available in conjunction with the TRD Off-Road Package, add a concept-truck look to the Tacoma V6 Access Cab or V6 Double Cab PreRunner and 4x4 models. The T|X Package gives the Tacoma a menacing look and additional sportiness with TRD 16-inch black-alloy bead-lock wheels and 265/70R16 BFGoodrich Rugged Trail tires.

Black tube side steps, a stainless steel exhaust tip and unique exterior graphics give the T|X the aesthetics of a custom truck. The T|X Pro is the performance-oriented package by also including a TRD cat-back performance exhaust system that gives the V6 a throatier sound and a bit more power.

The T|X and T|X Pro Packages offer a strong value compared to offering the contents as separate accessories, especially considering that they are covered under Toyota’s standard three year/36,000-mile comprehensive vehicle limited warranty and can be included in vehicle financing.

The TRD Off-Road Package underlying both T|X editions provides a carefully tuned balance of off-road performance and on-road handling. Chassis modifications include an electronic locking rear differential, progressive-rate front springs, specially tuned Bilstein shock absorbers, a 28-mm front stabilizer bar and BFGoodrich Rugged Trail tires. Fog lamps top off the package for a tough, sporty appearance.

Both the TRD Off-Road Package and TRD Sport Package have a 400W/115V power point in the bed; sport seats with adjustable lumbar support and unique fabric, and an overhead console with a compass and outside temperature display. Double Cab and Access Cab models also offer a back-up monitor system.

X-Runner: A Unique Sport Truck

The Tacoma X-Runner performance truck, unique in the entire compact truck category, features the 4.0-liter V6 engine with a specially tuned chassis. With a six-speed manual transmission, the X-Runner can accelerate from 0-to-60 mph in less than seven seconds. Just as impressive, the Tacoma X-Runner can achieve lateral acceleration in excess of 0.9-g, which is comparable to some performance cars.

The X-Runner's Access Cab design incorporates a full body kit, a hood scoop and integrated fog lamps. The color-keyed monochromatic exterior comes in three colors – Barcelona Red Metallic, Black, and Nautical Blue Metallic.

To take performance even higher, the available TRD supercharger kit boosts the engine’s output to 304 hp and 334 lb.-ft. of torque, and this package is also available for other Tacoma V6 models.

The design uses Eaton Roots-type rotating components in a one-piece supercharger plenum/manifold casting. The supercharger is fully warranted for up to five years or 60,000 miles, or the remainder of the powertrain warranty at the time of installation when installed by a Toyota dealer.

Safety

Standard on all Toyota models is the Star Safety System, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Smart Stop brake override technology (SST). Every Tacoma has standard three-point seatbelts for all seating positions, front seat-mounted side air bags, roll-sensing side curtain air bags (including a cutoff switch), and a front advanced dual-stage air bag system. A front passenger cutoff switch is standard on Access Cab models.

Access Cab and Double Cab models feature standard active headrests for the front seats, which move up and forward almost instantly in the event of certain rear-end collisions to help reduce the distance between the occupant's head and the headrest.

Capability, Handling and Ride

The TRD Off-Road Package, available for 4x4 V6 automatic models, includes Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) and Downhill Assist Control (DAC). HAC operates by independently controlling the brakes at each wheel as needed to help prevent the vehicle from rolling backward or slipping sideways during a transition from a stopped position to climbing a grade. An Automatic Limited-slip Differential (Auto LSD), which uses brake intervention to help reduce tire slippage at the rear wheels, is standard on all Tacoma models.

DAC uses engine braking to regulate downhill speed and independently control the brakes at each wheel to help improve directional control. DAC automatically de-activates if the driver depresses the brake or accelerator pedals, presses the DAC button, or shifts into neutral.

The TRD Off-Road Packages feature a locking rear differential that can be activated by a switch in the cab. An electronic rear differential is available on 4x4 models and the PreRunner.

Comfort and Convenience

The well-equipped 4x2 Regular Cab model features standard air conditioning; a full-size spare tire; Display Audio with a 6.1-inch touch-screen, AM/FM CD four-speaker sound system, Bluetooth and USB;  tachometer; digital clock; two instrument panel power points with a lighter; dome lamp, and mudguards.

Access Cab and Double Cab models add more standard features, including power windows and door locks, bucket seats and a center console. Power mirrors and driver seat adjustable lumbar support are also standard in Double Cab models.

With owners using their trucks for hard work and play, Tacoma offers heavy-duty all-weather flooring in the Tacoma Access and Double Cab models, while the more specialized TRD Sport and Off-Road models offer water-resistant fabric protection seats. Access Cab models feature a useful rear-console storage box and an available backup camera.

High-Performance Audio

The DoubleCab V-6 models continue to offer a more advanced Display Audio system with today’s most in-demand connectivity features. These include 6.1-in. touch-screen [with integrated backup camera display], AM/FM CD player with MP3/WMA playback capability, seven JBL GreenEdge JBL Synthesis speakers including subwoofer and amplifier, SiriusXM Radio with 90-day complimentary trial, HD Radio with iTunes Tagging, auxiliary audio jack, USB port with iPod connectivity and control, and hands-free phone capability, phone book access, advanced voice recognition, and music streaming via Bluetoothwireless. GreenEdge technology helps reduce fuel consumption by lowering the electric power demand on the vehicle.

The Toyota Entune system is a collection of popular mobile applications and data services, with three years of complimentary access. Once a smart phone is connected to the vehicle using Bluetooth wireless technology or a USB cable, Entune’s features are operated using the vehicle’s controls or, for some services, by voice recognition.

Entune includes Bing, iHeartRadio, MovieTickets.com, OpenTable and Pandora; real-time info including traffic, weather, fuel prices, sports and stocks. Access to Entune services is complimentary for three years.

Interior Design

A redesigned instrument gauge panel lends a sporty look in all models for 2012. The center console (standard on Access Cab and Double Cab models) flows into the instrument panel for a unified appearance. The console integrates three cupholders, two of which can accommodate extra-large containers.

Tacoma’s interior provides durability and comfort with high-grade fabric and generous standard equipment. Sound absorption material in the headliner and behind the rear seats, along with insulating carpeting, help to provide a quiet cabin. All Tacoma models provide dual bottle holders in driver's- and passenger's-side doors. Audio controls are mounted high for easy access.

Higher-grade models feature fabric-covered sun visors, an overhead console with map lights, and compartments for sunglasses and a garage door opener. Interior storage is maximized in Access Cab models with fold-up rear seats and under-seat storage. Double Cab models feature 60/40 split rear seats with adjustable headrests and under-seat storage.

Options

For Tacoma Access Cab and Double Cab models, the available option combinations are built on five core packages. The SR5 Package bundles styling and comfort features, including color-keyed overfenders and front bumper, chrome grille surround and chrome rear bumper. The package also adds intermittent wipers and upgraded interior features and trim, including a leather-wrapped steering wheel and automatic transmission shift lever.

The TRD Sport Package is road-focused and features its own specific suspension tuning and lower-profile 265/65 R17 tires on 17-inch alloy wheels. This package also gives Tacoma a sporty look with fog lamps, hood scoop, TRD graphics and color-keyed rear bumper, mirrors, grille surround and door handles.

The dealer-installed TRD Big Brake system was developed by Toyota Technical Center and TRD engineers. Engineered to provide effective braking performance under sustained heavy use, the Big Brake system uses 13 x 1.25-inch semi-floating vented rotors with directional internal fins, forged aluminum four-piston fixed calipers, larger pads with high coefficient-of-friction material and braided steel lines.

Limited Warranty

Toyota’s 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items.  Additional 60-month warranties cover the powertrain for 60,000 miles and corrosion with no mileage limitation. The Tacoma will also come standard with Toyota Care, a complimentary plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance and 24-hour roadside assistance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first.
