Recently, production engineers have encountered the possibility of eliminating camshafts and their timing hardware, thus increasing efficiency, fuel economy by as much as 35 percent and revolutionizing the internal combustion engine, according to an Automotive News report. This camless engine uses an electrohydraulic device to move the valved independently, moving away from mechanical systems toward electric. It has even been suggested that the valve motion in camless technology could be powered by waste exhaust gas, the report said. The concept is still a thing of the future, given its current low durability and high production costs. But if implemented, it could reduce vehicle emissions up to 20 percent.
