PPG is rolling out its new Delfleet One paint system for commercial vehicles in the U.S. and Canada. During a June 13 online press conference, the Pittsburgh-based paint and coatings provider said the system is comprised of next-generation coatings that provide “outstanding color-matching, ease of use, increased productivity and the commercial transportation industry’s lowest volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions for a premium paint system with full color capability.”

The Delfleet One system includes undercoats, topcoats and clearcoats. Significantly, PPG said it produces 57% fewer VOC emissions compared to a traditional paint system, ensuring compliance with current regulations in North America, including California. Rick Westerlund, marketing director, commercial coatings told HDT that there are no new VOC regulations pending in eitgehr the U.S. or Canada. “We decided [with this VOC reduction] to give ourselves the longest runway by getting well ahead of the regulations— we feel we’re setting the standard for the future [with the new system].”

J.J. Wirth, segment manager, commercial coatings, said that Delfleet One  system includes the latest aluminum and pearl pigments to provide full color capability for direct gloss, basecoat and matte colors. All of those have a VOC of 1.5 pounds per gallon while the system’s clearcoats and primers have a VOC of 2.0 or less pounds per gallon.

Described as a “compact” paint system, it offers 42 toners, four binders and four paint additives, which Wirth said reduces shop inventory requirements while being able to address all refinish or OEM work.

The new system is supported by PPG’s extensive color database that expands as new colors, special mixes and variant formulas emerge. It uses the exclusive Delfleet One Tint Guide and Delfleet One Color Deck, which houses thousands of OEM color chips and variants arranged chromatically. The system also ensures accurate color-matching through PPG’s color tools, including the Rapidmatch XI spectrophotometer, Touchmix XI computer, and Paintmanager XI software.

“The tools that support the PPG Delfleet One paint system make color selection and matching accuracy much easier,” said Wirth. “Painters can rest assured that the system’s ‘what you see is what you’ll spray’ approach precisely matches commercial vehicle colors. All our color tools are supported by the PPG Color Matching Laboratory, which is exclusively dedicated to accurately matching commercial vehicle colors.”

Wirth said Delfleet One was designed for ease of use. “Painters can feel confident using traditional application techniques, and the system’s excellent toner stability and consistency minimize color variation among painters. The system has very consistent ready-to-spray viscosities across color families, eliminating the need for painters to adjust each color before application or change spray-gun settings.”

She added that the system also boasts “excellent metallic control, good rivet hang and outstanding matte control with anti-burnishing, and it is easy to mix with shared hardeners and reducers. Painters can adjust dry times simply through hardener selection.”

A Delfleet One microsite provides detailed marketing information, product technical information, and how-to videos. PPG is also offering a training program on core application techniques for commercial refinish professionals. The training website provides specific Delfleet One course information, and site visitors are encouraged to use the search term “Delfleet One” to find classes in their area.
