The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has extended the public comment period for a recent proposed rulemaking that could potentially change hours of service rules for truck drivers.
On Aug. 23, FMCSA published an advanced notice of proposed rulemaking seeking public comment on four specific aspects of the HOS rules that the agency is considering changing:
- The short-haul HOS limit
- The HOS exception for adverse driving conditions
- The 30-minute rest break provision
- The Sleeper berth rule to allow drivers to split their required time in the sleeper berth
Originally, the public comment period was supposed to end on Sept. 24, but a number of organizations requested extensions, including American Trucking Associations, Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, International Brotherhood of Teamsters, National Pork Producers Council, and the National Tank Truck Carriers.
In order to provide interested parties with additional time to submit their responses, FMCSA has extended the deadline on public comment to Oct. 10, 2018.
