First motorized police patrol wagon: The City of Akron, Ohio, claims to have the world’s first motorized patrol wagon. Designed by the City mechanical engineer and built in 1899 by Akron’s Collins Buggy Co., the electrically powered vehicle cost $2,400. On level ground, it could reach 18 mph and travel about 30 miles before it needed to be recharged. The vehicle was equipped with electric lights, gongs, and a stretcher. The first assignment on the patrol wagon was to pick up an intoxicated man.
