FCA US is recalling 84,252 Ram ProMaster trailer light modules sold for installation on Ram ProMaster and ProMaster City vans because they may not illuminate the trailer brake lights during brake use, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In a separate action, the automaker is also recalling 1,576 2014-2016 model-year Ram ProMaster vans and 2015-2016-MY ProMaster City vans to resolve the software-related brake lighting issue.

“The Trailer Tow Lighting Control Module may have a software error on the affected vehicles and can prevent illumination of the trailer brake lights during brake actuation,” NHTSA said on its website. As a result, the involved vehicles fail to comply with all federal safety standards.

The part number for the trailer light modules is 68229650AB.

Dealers will replace the trailer tow light control modules, free of charge. Vehicle owners can reach FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) at (800) 853-1403.
