General Motors is recalling 8,763 2016 model-year Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickup trucks so dealers can replace a faulty console compartment lid latch assembly, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported.

During a vehicle crash, this console compartment lid latch assembly may fail to keep compartment doors closed. This defect — a violation of federal safety standards — poses a safety risk because contents stored in the console could strike vehicle occupants during a collision, NHTSA said.

The Chevrolet Colorado trucks were manufactured from Aug. 25 to Sept. 24 in 2015. The GMC Canyon trucks were manufactured from Aug. 28 to Sept. 24 in 2015.

Truck owners can reach Chevrolet customer service at (800) 222-1020, or GMC customer service at (800) 462-8782. GM’s number for this recall is 16370.
