Tennessee Valley Electric Cooperative (TVEC) and the Tennessee Valley Authority unveiled a new, quiet hybrid-electric bucket truck in Savannah. TVEC is among the first of 17 utilities across the valley to receive the trucks.
TVEC posted a YouTube video highlighting the benefits of the new truck, which includes significant fuel savings, reduced emissions, and quieter operation (versus the conventional diesel-powered equipment).
TVA -- along with the Department of Energy and the Electric Power Research Institute -- provided funding for the new equipment, which also provided a significant cost benefit for TVEC members, Jerry Taylor, general manager for TVEC, noted in the video. Taylor said the utility was able to purchase two new trucks for close to what one would typically cost.
As part of the program, a public electric vehicle charging station is now available in front of the Tennessee River Museum in Savannah.
