For the second quarter in a row, the Southeastern Electric Exchange (SEE) recognized Tampa Electric as a leading electric utility in safety performance. The company achieved the lowest incidence rate among all participating electric utilities in the Southeast in the first quarter of this year, and maintained that ranking through the second quarter. This is the first time in company history Tampa Electric has enjoyed a first-place ranking.

In 2012, TECO Energy saw its best safety performance in the more than 118 years TECO Energy companies have served Florida communities.

The SEE, a nonprofit, nonpolitical trade association of investor-owned electric utilities, listed Tampa Electric in the top quartile of its peers with respect to power generation and transmission and distribution operations. Overall, the company had the second-lowest incidence rate among the 17 companies participating in the 2012 data comparison.

The American Gas Association (AGA), an association representing more than 200 energy companies delivering natural gas nationwide, named Peoples Gas as having the lowest incidence rate among medium to large companies in 2012. While the 2013 AGA safety results for gas utilities will not be published until next year, early indicators suggest that Peoples Gas will rank in first place.

"I am so proud of this outstanding performance by the men and women in our electric and gas divisions,” said Gordon Gillette, president of Tampa Electric and Peoples Gas. “Safety is our No. 1 corporate value and I have seen firsthand how our culture of proactive identification and correction of possible safety issues and looking out for each other has served us well."
