SmartWitness is marking its second year as the official provider of judicial review for the FIA European Truck Racing Championship (ETRC), which is using SmartWitness’ high-definition video replay technology to help enforce sporting regulations and safety, investigate suspected driving infringements, and provide footage from the cockpits in real time.

SmartWitness’ in-vehicle cameras, recorders, and software are installed in the cockpits of all competing ETRC trucks. In the event of an incident, race officials use SmartWitness products to quickly retrieve recorded video of the incident in question in order to determine whether a driver started illegally, caused an avoidable collision, forced a driver off the track, illegitimately impeded another driver, or violated other rules carrying penalties that can affect race outcomes.

SmartWitness technology is also helping ETRC officials enforce safety requirements, provide driver-view footage for fans, and advance its campaign to address truck driver shortages by potentially using SmartWitness systems to reduce the cost of insuring apprentice drivers.

These capabilities leverage the core functionality of the SmartWitness platform, which is used by commercial fleets around the world to optimize operations, enhance safety, exonerate drivers involved in traffic incidents, and reduce at-fault insurance claims and related legal fees, according to SmartWitness.

“The cooperation with SmartWitness fits well into our long-term strategy which focuses on safety, sustainability transformation and truck driver shortages,” said George Fuchs, Managing Director of the European Truck Racing Association. “SmartWitness not only delivers benefits on the race track, but also enhances safety in the day-to-day life of our fellow truck drivers on the road.”
