Baltimore Gas & Electric (BGE) announced a new pilot program that will test drone use for inspecting power lines and poles. Currently, inspections are conducted by BGE workers that have to climb poles or use binoculars, reports the Baltimore Sun.

During the pilot, BGE will observe how drones can impact reliability and employee safety. The utility will receive some help from AeroLabs, the software research and development unit of its parent company Exelon that is working on smart drone technology.
