Shellback has introduced its Smartphone Safe — a phone case with embedded technology that reports vehicle movement and status to reduce distracted driving. The case works by connecting to smartphones via Bluetooth.

Although the case is meant to prevent drivers from checking their phones, drivers can still hear notification sounds from incoming calls or texts. If the phone is removed from its case, it will automatically start recording time, speed, and send an automated compliance report to fleet managers, according to the company. Fleet managers will also receive updates on device usage in real time, and will know if the case is open or closed.

The phone case comes with the Live Undistracted Monitoring App, which fleet managers can use to manage fleets in multiple locations. According to the Shellback, users can add or delete cell phones from the system, create regional teams of drivers, and monitor cell phone safety reports and statistics.

The Smartphone Safe is $20 per cell phone and has a monthly monitoring fee of $15.
