Recently, Track Your Truck released an overview of auxiliary power units (APUs) weight exemption guidelines by state. 

Auxiliary power units (otherwise known as APUs) eliminate the need to run truck engines on idle while parked and are commonly used by truck drivers to limit fuel use. But one drawback is that these units usually weigh a couple hundred pounds, and may be a problem for drivers who often carry close to maximum weight limits. With the president’s latest expansion of the MAP-21 bill dealing with state-by-state APU regulations, this may be confusing to drivers who often cross state lines.

According to Track Your Truck, some states now have laws on the books that outline their exemptions. Others don’t have laws, but do have enforcement policies in place that allow for the extra weight — so drivers would not be cited. A few states still do not have an exemption on the books for APUs.
