Daimler Trucks North America announced that it has become a minority investor in Zonar Systems as part of a long-term strategic partnership. Zonar has long had an automated pre-trip inspection system ane more recently broadened its telematics offerings.

Zonar will continue to operate independently, with Martin Daum, DTNA’s CEO, becoming a member of its Board of Directors. Daimler says it is working with Zonar toward a shared vision of optimal transportation logistics through intelligent connectivity.

The two companies have partnered for more than five years, first launching the Virtual Technician remote diagnostic system.

“Telematics and connectivity are revolutionizing commercial vehicle operation with enormous opportunities for OEMs – especially for us as the leader of this business,” said Wolfgang Bernhard, head of Daimler Trucks and Buses. “That is exactly why we made connectivity a dedicated part of our strategy.”

Zonar’s products can be factory installed in Freightliner Trucks, Western Star, and Thomas Built buses.DTNA’s telematics solution, Detroit Connect, was developed by Zonar and is used in more than 150,000 vehicles.
