A Tesla Motors co-founder hopes to bring green-vehicle innovation to refuse trucks, which can consume an average of 14,000 gallons of fuel per year, he said at an investor conference in Los Angeles.

While speaking at the Milken Global Conference, Ian Wright of Wrightspeed and co-founder of Tesla said his company is focused on improving fuel efficiency for refuse fleets by rolling out his hybrid-electric powertrain technology for the medium-duty vehicles, reports TheStreet.com.

Wright said refuse fleets who use his product would be able to cut their operating expenses in half. The company is also working with FedEx on upgrading its fleet of medium-duty delivery trucks.

Wright will give the keynote speech at the Fleet Technology Expo on Aug. 25 in Long Beach, Calif.
