Piedmont Natural Gas officially opened its latest CNG fueling station July 15 in Nashville, Tenn. The new CNG station is the company's tenth overall and their second fueling station in Nashville. Karl Newlin, Piedmont senior vice president and chief financial officer, joined by Nashville Mayor Karl Dean, celebrated the opening of the environmentally-friendly CNG fueling station at an event at the site of the station.

The new facility is located at 541 Spence Lane in South Nashville.

"With other public stations being developed, Piedmont is helping to create CNG fueling corridors along the major interstates in our service area," said Piedmont Chief Financial Officer Karl Newlin, who was present at the event. "Already there are 11 customer owned stations in our territory with 5-7 more being planned."

Metropolitan Nashville Mayor, Karl Dean, said, "Piedmont's newest fueling station marks another important milestone in our efforts to make Nashville one of the greenest cities in the Southeast. Nashville is supporting this initiative by purchasing the first compressed natural gas vehicle in the Metro fleet, and these efforts, together, are concrete steps toward a cleaner city and a legacy we can build for future generations of Nashvillians."

Piedmont's Newlin further added that the Company is well along in its plans to convert at least one-third of its more than 1,000 fleet vehicles, to CNG by the end of 2015. As the market for cars and trucks using CNG continues to expand, Newlin expects CNG volumes for transportation use to climb significantly.  "System-wide we expect to displace 2 million gasoline gallon equivalents in 2014," estimated Newlin, "and we expect that number will increase in coming years."

Along with remarks by Nashville Mayor Karl Dean, Waste Management Inc. director of Business Development and Strategic Planning, Robert Cheney, also spoke. That was followed by a demonstration of the wide variety of vehicles to be serviced at the facility, ranging from fleet cars and trucks to street sweepers and semis. That includes one of Piedmont's fleet cars, a natural gas powered Honda Civic recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency as the cleanest, commercially available, internal combustion vehicle now available.

The new Piedmont CNG facility is open to the public (credit card purchases only).
