In an effort to help protect utility crews that often work during storms and other severe weather, Okaloosa Republican Senator Greg Evers filed a bill in December that would force drivers to slow down or move over a lane when approaching a utility vehicle on the side of a road.

A utility vehicle, as described in the bill text, is “a motor vehicle that bears an emblem that is visible from the roadway and clearly identifies that the vehicle belongs to or is under contract with a person, entity, cooperative, board, commission, district, or unit of local government that provides electric, natural gas, water, wastewater, cable, telephone, or communications services.”

The bill was filed on Dec. 6 and was referred to Transportation and Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Tourism, and Economic Development on Dec. 18.

Upon passing of the bill, Florida would join Arkansas as a “Move-Over” state on July 1.
