SCHAUMBURG, IL – Tammy Evans, VP of fleet operations for Modern Transportation Services, received the Fleet Safety Award. The Fleet Safety Award was presented on Tuesday, May 22, at the first annual Fleet Safety Conference, produced by Bobit Business Media.

Sponsored by the American Automotive Leasing Association (AALA), the award recognizes candidates who have shown leadership, innovation, and measurable results in enhancing the safety of their employees, those travelling with them, as well as everyone else who shares the road with them. A panel of industry judges evaluated the responses and selected this year’s winner. AALA’s Executive Director Pam Sederholm presented the award.

Award criteria included accident statistics, submission of the fleets vehicle safety policy, and additional details on safety programs including MVRs, drug/alcohol testing, policy acknowledgement sign off, safety training and frequency, award programs in place, and details on how drivers are measured for driving risk, among others.

According to the criteria submitted for Modern Transportation Services, the company uses Greenroad’s services to improve its overall fleet safety, in addition to services and technologies from other companies. Modern Transportation Services saw a 47-percent decrease in its Greenroad safety score (a lower score indicates an improvement) since it implemented Greenroad’s program in 2010.

GreenRoad tabulates on-going driving performance. Risky events get translated into a single, simple metric for each driver and are aggregated across an entire fleet. This is called the Safety Score. This score represents the number of safety events generated per 10 hours of driving time. The lower the score, the better the driver.

Other measures to improve fleet safety include strict driver hiring criteria and a focus on creating, and maintaining, a culture of safety. For example, the company holds weekly conferences with all managers to review incidents. The company also holds quarterly staff meetings with drivers. Managers at the company also visit terminals and travel with drivers in order to improve how drivers navigate challenging safety situations, for example difficult road conditions on specific routes.

Automotive Fleet magazine and AALA would like to congratulate Modern Transportation Services’ Evans on the award for its focus on the safety of its drivers.
