TOKYO, JAPAN – Japan’s Isuzu Motors Ltd and Hino Motors Ltd will jointly develop technology for cleaning up emissions from diesel engines, in a bid to better compete with European and U.S. rivals, the Nikkei reported, without citing its sources, according to Thomson Financial.

The two auto companies plan to jointly develop new equipment, such as filters, which are designed to reduce harmful substances released in the emissions, the business daily said. The technology would be applied to their new truck models starting in 2009.

Toyota Motor Corp took a 5.9 percent stake in Isuzu last year, paving the way for greater cooperation with Hino, a Toyota subsidiary.
