OSHAWA, TORONTO – General Motors will build hybrid versions of its Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks at the Oshawa truck assembly plant east of Toronto, the company’s Canadian subsidiary announced, according to the Toronto Globe and Mall.

GM Canada said Oshawa will be the first plant to produce the hybrid Silverados and Sierras, for sale in fall 2008. David Paterson, GM Canada’s vice-president of corporate and environmental affairs, indicated their would be no work-force increase as a result. Most of the vehicles will be exported to the United States, although Canada is also a big market for GM’s full-sized pickups.

The hybrid Silverados and Sierras will use what GM calls “two-mode” technology that uses the electric motor to assist at highway speeds, not just when the vehicle is doing a lot of starting and stopping.
