General Motors announced that its 2014 GMC Sierra’s standard 4.3L EcoTec V-6 engine will offer the most torque of any standard V-6 in the vehicle’s segment, at 305 lb.-ft.
GM said the new V-6 uses direct injection, active fuel management (which involves cylinder deactivation), and continuously variable valve timing, and can produce 285 hp. The V-6 has trailering ratings of up to 7,200 lbs. for a regular cab, short bed, four-wheel-drive model. GM matched the V-6 with a six-speed automatic transmission. The automaker has yet to announce official EPA fuel economy estimates for this engine.
The new EcoTec3 V-6 builds on GM’s experience, as it debuted the first V-6-equipped pickup truck in 1960. In addition, the 4.3L V-6 introduced as standard equipment on GMC half-ton pickups in 1985 used geometry and engineering from the brand’s Small Block V-8.
GM stated that 2014 Sierra models equipped with the 4.3L EcoTec3 V-6 will go on sale later this year and have a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $25,085. This price includes a destination charge of $995 but excludes tax, title, license, and dealer fees.
