Medium-Duty Truck Values Stumble This Summer

As the summer season continues, one trend is emerging for medium-duty trucks — declining auction prices, according to Black Book’s August Specialty Markets report.
Black Book looked at some popular trucks over the years and analyzed their valuations at recent collectible auctions:
Over the past three months, two segments have shown unchanged value or an increase in overall value: Full-Size Pickups are unchanged, and Small Pickups have gained +0.2% in value.
Volume-weighted, overall truck segment (including pickups, SUVs, and vans) values decreased by just 0.03% last week, better than the average decrease of 0.17% per week in the previous four weeks.
New-vehicle sales through the first six months of 2017 are expected to be down 2.3%, and high quality off-lease vehicles may be part of the reason why, according to Kelley Blue Book.
IARA will be hosting its 16th Annual Summer Roundtable in Nashville this year. The three-day event will be held at the Hilton Downtown Nashville on Aug. 16-18.
Used vehicle prices experienced a reversal in May, falling 1.2% from the previous month, according to Black Book.
When weighted for volume, the overall truck segment values (including pickups, SUVs, and vans) decreased by 0.08% last week, which is better than the average decrease of 0.21% per week in the previous four weeks.
This week’s Black Book Market Insights report looks at the truck segments that are picking up less weekly depreciation compared with cars, signaling that summer is fast approaching.
Industry experts say a glut of used trucks remains on the market and, in extreme cases, some fleets actually owe more for equipment than it is now worth on the secondary market.
Generally, medium-duty segments are holding up well, with cabovers and lighter GVW conventional trucks performing the best.

Overall wholesale used-vehicle prices (on a mix-, mileage-, and seasonally-adjusted basis) improved 0.5% month-over-month in April. On a year-over-year basis in April, only pickups saw gains greater than the overall market.
Used vehicle values increased slightly in April as tracked by Black Book's Used Vehicle Retention Index that measures values of 2- to 6-year old vehicles, according to the company.
Ford and Nissan vehicles appeared most prominently among the vehicles chosen as having the best fleet value by Vincentric for the 2017 model year, the firm that analyzes total cost of ownership announced.
