Medium-duty trucks at auction have had a shaky start to 2017, with both volume and pricing down compared to the same time last year, according to NADA Used Car Guide’s March 2017 Commercial Truck Guide Industry Update. However, with a boost in demand expected in the latter half of the year, medium-duty trucks should finish off this year in better shape than in 2016.

Vehicle Depreciation to Reach 17.8% in 2017

The vehicle depreciation rate will reach 17.8% in 2017 on 17 million new-vehicle sales, slightly higher than the 17.3% mark recorded in 2016, according to latest forecast from Black Book and Fitch Ratings. Prior to the Great recession, annual depreciation trended between 16% and 18%.

Auction values for one- to three-year-old vehicles fell a substantial 6.8%, or $1,146 per unit, in the fourth quarter of 2016.

Analysts at Kelley Blue Book reported that average values for one- to three-year-old pickup trucks have remained strong as a result of high demand at auction, despite fuel prices peaking in December 2016.
