ALEXANDRIA, VA – TRALA-supported legislation to establish a sales tax exemption for maintenance and repair costs on trucks over 26,000 lbs. was introduced in the Connecticut Assembly on Feb. 14, 2008. The bill, HB 5255 introduced by Representative Joseph Serra (D-Middletown), would exempt both parts and labor on Class 7 and 8 trucks from the state’s 6-percent sales tax.  This exemption could result in an estimated savings of $400,000 per year for the truck renting and leasing industry in the state.

Currently, Connecticut exempts all trucks with a GVWR over 26,000 pounds from sales tax. However, parts and labor to maintain and repair those vehicles are not exempt. Surrounding states MA, NJ, NY, and RI all offer sales tax exemptions for some or all of the maintenance and repair costs on heavy-duty trucks.
