Used Class 8 truck sales saw a summer sales surge that could indicate that fleets are opting to buy used trucks instead of newer models, according to an ACT Research report.

Class 8 truck same dealer sales volumes in August increased 19% in July, remaining on a positive trend. When compared to August 2015, the sales volumes are only off by 2%. The boost in sales was above what is typically expected, according to ACT.

“Higher than normal late summer sales could signal truck buyers are opting to purchase used trucks over new ones,” said Steve Tam, ACT’s vice President-Commercial Vehicle Sector. He added, “Strong sales were a common theme across all three market segments, with retail posting a 12% increase month-over-month, and wholesale and auction improving 33% and 59% month-over-month, respectively.”
