OTTAWA & PORTLAND, OR – TransCore reported its GlobalWave satellite network, the backbone of its in-cab and trailer tracking system, recorded 99.992-percent availability, or on-air performance, in 2007 for its North American operations, including Mexico. Availability, or “uptime,” refers to the percentage of time the network is accessible to customers.

The average availability for all the networks worldwide that TransCore manages was 99.991 percent. TransCore’ satellite network availability compares favorably with dial-up POTS (plain-old-telephone system) standards of 99.999 percent availability, and cellular systems’ 95+ percent availability.

“Over 675 fleets worldwide depend on our ability to provide location, alarm and cargo information,” said David Sward, general manager of TransCore’s GlobalWave business. “Throughout the course of a year, our North American network manages approximately 315,000 customer inquiries per day, translating to more than 115 million per year.”

“System availability is essential for smooth operations,” added Sward. “Even during rare, brief interruptions, all messages were stored and all transactions saved. Not only attaining, but sustaining the elusive ‘four 9s’ over the course of a year is a significant achievement.”

GlobalWave provides standby systems, back-up power and 24/7 technical coverage to help ensure continuous service.

“We continue to set higher standards for network reliability and dependability,” said Sward. “For example, before any network change or upgrade goes on the air, TransCore invests many man-months of effort to ensure that every feature and application works flawlessly. The keys to our success are experienced people, strong processes, comprehensive network management tools and robust technology.”

GlobalWave mobile terminals are built to SAE 1455 truck standards and are verified by third party test facilities. From enclosures, to batteries and cables, GlobalWave secures the best quality to ensure dependable operation even in the harshest environments.
